Deichman Biblo Tøyen

28 May 2016

Library exclusively for children. A library located at Tøyen Square in ‘Gamle Oslo’ is upgrading an entire district after removal of a museum. Biblo Tøyen Youth Library is based on targeting exclusively children between the ages of 10 to 15. This concept is novel for Tøyen, for Oslo and even for Norway. The concept was brought to life by international creative guide and architect Aat Vos in collaboration with an architectural psychologist and a crew of skilled set-builders. This a-typical culture house speaks to this young target audience through many ways that include shapes, colors and props.

Norway’s first library exclusively for children. No adults allowed.

The children’s library experience is enriched by inspiring them and inviting them to read, play, interact and discover. Understanding the needs of this target group is essential; young minds tend to wander and love looking for clues. Interior design was the tool used to meet these needs, with psychology as the foundation.

Creative choices are based on Deichman’s motto: Hold Deg Våken! Keep yourself awake! Vivid colors, patterns, props, unusual textures and plenty of opportunities to explore ensure the balance between fascination and exploration is met. A light and whimsical atmosphere is achieved through floating elements that include bookshelves and single ski lift gondolas. Wavy mirror walls, unexpected props such as wheelbarrows and a truck as a kitchen demand to be explored while caves inside the walls, a vintage barber chair and a submarine-inspired corner flooded with blue light offer unusual places to escape to with your favorite book.

Biblo Toyen provides 10 to 15-year-olds with a place to call their own. This library offers an escape from parents and siblings, regardless of disposable income or background. This safe haven contributes to a more balanced lifestyle for this age group, and ultimately a healthier society. Third places are increasingly adopting financial thresholds, and although it does not charge an entrance fee, this library is bursting with value. A range of educational activities such as cooking, 3D-printing, music and drama ensure young minds are intrigued and challenged. Going back in time ourselves we create an extraordinary third space for the future: Biblo Toyen.
