Digit-all Community

Stadtteilbibliothek Kalk

Kalk is one of the most challenging old industrial areas of the German city of Cologne. The area wanted to reinvent itself by breathing new life into local society. Surpassing initial plans and expectations, you’ll now find a modern, interactive and technologically advanced library in Kalk as a first step toward a contemporary and open community.

Why

Becoming more appealing and inclusive

The original idea was to create a non-commercial place that was also inviting to international visitors. It should set the tone for people to meet, find information and share knowledge. All ages had to be accommodated, from children to the elderly. The final goal was for all visitors to have the same opportunities to work, read, learn, play, or simply meet up. The first plan focused on social inclusion for younger visitors by adding a gaming station to the library’s youth section. However, these initial plans proved too modest for the district library in Kalk.

"Together with the Kalk inhabitants, we developed an inclusive and interactive concept; this is community engagement at its best."

Hannelore Vogt
Director of Cologne Public Library
How

From playing games to serious Design Thinking

After we hosted a workshop and had been collaborating with the local team and talking to stakeholders, it became clear that Kalk was ready for a bigger change. Rather than a simple gaming station, we used Design Thinking methods to redesign the entire library. But how could Design Thinking lead up to a social community? An integrated approach involving the citizens was the answer. Thanks to the cooperation of Kalk locals, user surveys were collected to ensure the new library would fit perfectly into the community. All parties shared a vision of a third place that their neighborhood could be proud of and call home. This opportunity to drive change proves that a good story has the power to enthuse stakeholders.

Sharing and chilling

New generation

The extremely informal, appealing atmosphere challenges the young people’s view of a library and leads to an image and paradigm shift. Here the visitor becomes the maker who learns new things and shares their knowledge with others.

What

Local living room with a tech edge

Being open to other languages, different ages and cultures is reflected in the library’s interior. It includes a multi-lingual media selection, furniture suitable for seniors, a children’s playground and an entire floor where Generation Z feels welcome enough to make this department their own. Kalk, Cologne’s most migrant-populated district, faces inequality rooted in uneven opportunities. Notably, today it is home to one of Germany’s most innovative libraries, boasting a unique digitecture project by Bremen artist group Urbanscreen.

This installation allows children and adolescents to collaborate with local artists, experimenting with large-scale digital artworks. Transformed into a local living room with a technological edge, the Kalk District Library nurtures community pride and identity.

More impressions

  • The Wall is a large interactive screen that offers unique opportunities for experimentation. One can work with tablets simultaneously and together on large-scale graphics, graffiti and animations, and save these projects.

  • Kalk library features a makerspace as well as a mobile makerspace – an e-cargo bike, which enables us to reach people outside the library.

  • Staying open for longer hours and even without staff, the Kalk District Library adopted an open library concept.

"A good story has the power to engage stakeholders, ensuring they not only feel heard but truly listened to, fostering the opportunity to drive change."
